As much as I have tried to look for information about this lens' manufacturer around the web, there is little to be found. The general consensus appears to be that it is very hard to determine the origins based on serial number so if anyone solves that puzzle, please post a reply. There are some Sears 28mm lenses that are thought to be of Tomioka origin and are considered to be of exceptionally high quality.

Ignoring the company of origin for the moment, the lens has a very sturdy build and a very solid feel to it.
The focus ring 'glides' around the barrel though it is not quite as damped as the Taks or the Flektogon but is a pleasure to use being different. The aperture clicks through full stops.
The image quality is fairly good. Colors are neutral and results moderately sharp wide open.

Test shot:

Sears 28mm f2.8 @f2.8

  1. hi, thanks for the post :)
why always take pictures wide open? especially with wide-angle?
these are excellent never fully open,
and the wide angle it is used closed from f4 where it begins to be very good,
    f5.6 or f8 ...

    1. thanks for your comment cybermees. You are absolutely right - I might put up some shots at smaller apertures. There is no particular reason I generally use the largest aperture besides the fact that in my opinion it really tests a lens where it tends to be weakest. Since I do not carry out thorough testing for this blog, a couple of shots wide open provide a general idea of how a lens would perform :)

  2. What's "auto" about this lens? I just purchased it. The IQ seems decent and the build quality is great, but I see no setting for auto aperture?

    1. Thanks for visiting Bob.

In legacy manual lenses the word 'auto' refers to the aperture being mechanically coupled with the camera body for which the lens was "originally intended for". This lens for example would have auto aperture coupling with the Pentax SLR film cameras.
